RICE, John Randolph

John Randolph Rice, CPA (Age 86)

John Randolph Rice, CPA, of Rockville, MD, passed peacefully on November 22, 2019 at the age of 86. He was born in Syracuse, NY on November 20, 1933 and moved to Cumberland, MD in 1936. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph W. Rice and Claudine McCullough Rice of Cumberland.

John is survived by JoAnn, his loving wife of 61 years, and three children Karen S. DiPeppe (Joe), Scott R. Rice (Amy), and Jody D. Rice as well as six grandchildren (Meaghan and Wes Collins, Theresa and John Nielsen, Scott, Jr., Kyle, John Tyler and Jack) and two great grandchildren (Jameson and Annaleigh).

John graduated from the University of Maryland in 1955, where he was a member and served as chapter president of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He lived in the Washington area from 1958 until his death.

He started his accounting career with Arthur Andersen in New York City in 1955. He then served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Boston, the first guided missile cruiser. After leaving the military, he served as an internal auditor of Capital Airlines. In 1961, he took a position as Business Manager and later Comptroller of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) where he headed the financial department for the next 38 years. He retired in May 1999.

Mr. Rice shared his passion for sports as Commissioner and Coach of the Farmland Athletic Association’s (FAA) basketball and softball programs from 1973-1978. John served on the Board of Directors during construction of the Tilden Woods Swimming Pool and served as its Treasurer and Tax Preparer from 1964 into the 1970’s.

In his retirement, he played softball and basketball in programs sponsored by the Montgomery County Senior Sports Association and served as its Treasurer from 1992-2017. He was also a member of Board 12, International Association of Approved Basketball Officials from 2003-2011 and refereed games in Washington, D.C. and Maryland. John also umpired softball games for the Greater Washington Softball Umpires Association-ASA from 2007-2013 and the Maryland Umpires Softball Association-NSA from 2005-2013.

As an avid fan of the Redskins and Washington Nationals, John was delighted to cheer the Nats on to their first World Series victory.

Interment MD Veteran’s Cemetery-Rocky Gap at a later date.

BERGMANN, Leola

LEOLA RUTH CARTER BERGMANN (Age 97)

On November 8th, 2019, Leola Ruth Carter Bergmann passed peacefully at her home in Silver Spring, Maryland. She lived to be 97 years old. She was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, the eldest of Bonnie Glenn Carter and Virginia Theresa Peterson’s three children. Ruth was very studious from an early age and excelled in school.  She earned a degree in English from the University of Texas in 1943. She moved to Washington, DC during WWII, and worked at National Airport in the air traffic control division. In DC, she met her husband, Robert Theodore Bergmann, at a boarding house run by the Walther League of the Lutheran Church. They married November 17, 1945 and raised three children.

Ruth and Robert attended Calvary Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Maryland where she was active in the Altar Guild. Ruth was a loyal Wife, Mother and Grandmother. She had a fantastic memory and was extremely literate, completing daily crossword puzzles and winning avidly at Scrabble games into her nineties. She had an Oxford Unabridged English Dictionary on a pedestal in her kitchen which she regularly used. Her nature was steadfast, simple, and caring. She was sharp, meticulous, organized and intelligent. She had a passion for ancestry and history. She was extremely dutiful to her family and will be greatly missed.

Ruth was preceded in death by husband Robert (1921-1996). She is survived by children Paul (Carole), Martha and Ted, as well as her much loved grandchildren Luke (Bonan) and Rita.  Ruth will be buried in Concordia, Missouri, alongside husband Robert and other relatives.  A memorial service will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church in the spring.

MUDD, Mary Agnes

Mary Agnes Mudd
July, 4 1927 – November, 15 2019
On November 15, 2019, in Silver Spring, Maryland, left this world and entered into eternal life to join her beloved husband William Mudd and cherished son Chaplain David A. Mudd both of whom predeceased her. Mary was born on the 4th of July in 1927 to the late Angelo Trotta and Rosa Malia and the oldest of four siblings, Ralph Trotta, Jeanette T. Williams, and Rose M. Trotta who all predeceased her. Mary grew up in Brookland, DC and was part of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, a community for Italian-Americans. During World War II, Mary worked as a typist for the U.S Treasury Department part time while attending McKinley Tech. After the war, she married her high school sweetheart Bill Mudd and had six children. Additionally, Mary worked for over 30 years for the U.S. Department of State in the Intelligence community at nights to provide for her family. Bill and Mary moved out of DC to Oakview, a growing community in Silver Spring, Maryland where she joined St. Camillus Church. Mary and Bill sent all of their children to St. Camillus school and later sent all six children to catholic high schools, Georgetown Prep, Gonzaga, and Immaculata. After she retired from the State Department, Mary started a second career as Pastoral Associate under the St. Camillus’ Pastor Msgr. James T. Beattie for another 25 years. Mary became a pillar of building the St. Camillus Community and was an example to many other women how to lead and minister in the Church. She taught Sunday school, providing assistance to the poor, needy and elderly. She regularly would offer her home for parishioners when they needed assistance watching children, housing students from abroad, and even a few wedding receptions. She loved everyone and made sure that everyone no matter how marginalized felt not only her love but the love of God. Even after retiring a second time at 80, Mary continued to minister to the elderly and the sick by calling those in the hospital and sending birthday cards to all the senior citizens. Mary is surviving by her loving children, William R. Mudd, James M. Mudd, John S. Mudd (Ellen), Robert B. Mudd, and Maryrose Mudd; her wonderful brother-in-law Donald William; her niece Juliana Trotta; her cherished grandchildren Marie-Therese F. David) Witte, Steven B. Mudd, Annarosa F. Mudd, Elise N. Mudd, and Nicholas B. (Melanie) Mudd; her beloved great-grandchildren, Andrew F. Witte, Marianna F. Witte, and Jackson D. Mudd; and many other cousins and friends. A vigil will be held on Wednesday, November 20 from 3 to 8 p.m. at St. Camillus Catholic Church, 1600 St. Camillus Drive, Silver Spring, Maryland 20903. The Mass for Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, November 21 at 10 a.m., also at St. Camillus Church. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland 20906. Friends can make donations in Mary’s memory to St. Camillus Church.

On November 15, 2019 George passed peacefully in his home. He will be remembered as a cherished  father to Teresa Weisinger, Justine Hranicky Muhammad, Kenneth Hranicky, and Marie Ried;  brother to Frank Hranicky and Dorothy Alberts, grandfather to Elise Weisinger, Naomi Weisinger, Jeremy Weisinger, Sarah Howard, Peter Weisinger, Aaron Weisinger, Aqummah Muhammad, Daniel Weisinger, Zitaqwa Muhammad, Jeff Reid, James Reid Jr., Jonathan Reid, Jay Reid, Joseph Reid, Joanna Reid, Juliana Reid, Justin Reid, great grandfather of 12 and friend. George was a long-time member of Holy Cross Parish. He served his country in the United Stated Air Force. He worked for many years as a manager at Bergman’s Dry Cleaning, and in his later years was a clerk at Weis Super Market. He will be greatly missed. Graveside service at Gates of Heaven Cemetery Monday, November 18, 2019 at 2 PM.
